Pressfort vs Jetpack Security
A Jetpack Security alternative with a developer on hand.
Jetpack Security bundles backups, malware scanning and spam protection from Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. It's good value. What it doesn't include is a person to fix your site.
The short answer
Jetpack Security is a well-priced bundle of real-time backups, malware scanning and spam protection, and it's easy to switch on. It finds threats and offers one-click fixes, but it isn't a hands-on clean-up service. Pressfort includes clean-ups by a developer, runs your updates on staging first and is set up for you.

Where Jetpack Security is strong
Jetpack Security is made by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, and it’s one of the easiest ways to get solid protection running. Install the plugin, connect a WordPress.com account, and backups, malware scanning and a firewall switch on together.
Its backups are the standout. They’re real-time, so every post, order or settings change is saved as it happens, and you can roll back to any point from the activity log. For a busy online shop, that’s more fine-grained than a once-a-day backup.
The Security plan also includes Akismet, which is very good at filtering comment and contact-form spam. At $19.95 a month billed yearly, and half that in the first year, it’s a lot for the money. There’s a 14-day refund on yearly plans too.
Where Pressfort is different
A person fixes it. Jetpack Scan finds threats and offers one-click fixes, which handles a lot of common problems. But Jetpack says Scan isn’t designed to fully clean a site that was infected before it was active, and complex infections can need more than a button. Pressfort includes two hands-on clean-ups a year by a WordPress developer, who also closes the gap that let the attack in.
Updates are handled. Most successful attacks use a known weakness, usually an out-of-date plugin. Jetpack Security doesn’t run your updates. Pressfort takes a backup, tests updates on a staging copy of your site, then pushes them live.
Backups by time, not by storage. Jetpack Security starts with 10GB of backup storage. If you reach the limit, older backups are deleted and how far back you can go may shrink. Pressfort keeps every daily backup for 90 days.
Nothing to set up. Pressfort is switched on and watched for you, and you get plain-English reports by email.
Where Jetpack goes further. Its backups are real-time rather than daily, it includes spam protection, and its activity log keeps 30 days of history against 7 days on Pressfort.
What it costs
The price, with a clean-up included
| Plan | Price | Sites | Hack clean-up |
|---|---|---|---|
| PressfortEvery feature, set up for you | $659 a year | 1 site | Included, two a year |
| Jetpack FreeBrute-force protection, downtime monitoring, manual firewall rules | $0 | 1 site | Not included |
| Jetpack Security$19.95 a month billed yearly, half price in the first year | $239.40 a year | 1 site | Not included |
| Jetpack Complete$49.95 a month billed yearly. Adds 1TB of backups and growth tools | $599.40 a year | 1 site | Not included |
Jetpack Security costs less than Pressfort, especially in the first year, and includes real-time backups and comment spam protection that Pressfort doesn't. What it doesn't include is someone to clean up your site or run your updates. If a hack needs more than a one-click fix, you'd be paying a developer separately.

Does Jetpack Security remove malware?
Jetpack Scan offers one-click fixes for many of the threats it finds. Jetpack says Scan isn't designed to fully clean up a site that was infected before it was active, and suggests asking its support team for advice in that case. Pressfort includes two hands-on clean-ups a year by a WordPress developer.
Is Jetpack Security worth it?
For many sites, yes. Real-time backups, malware scanning and Akismet spam protection for $19.95 a month billed yearly, and half that in the first year, is good value. It's a set of tools rather than a service, though, so updates and anything beyond a one-click fix are still down to you.
Can I keep Jetpack if I switch to Pressfort?
Yes. Jetpack does a lot more than security, such as stats, social sharing and site search. If you keep it, switch off Jetpack's firewall and scanning so they don't overlap with Pressfort's.
Does Pressfort include spam protection?
No. Pressfort's firewall stops bad bots and password-guessing attacks, but it doesn't filter comment or form spam the way Akismet does. If spam is a problem on your site, Akismet works fine alongside Pressfort.
What happens to my Jetpack backups if I switch?
They stay with Jetpack while your plan is active. Pressfort starts its own daily off-site backups as soon as your site is connected, so it's worth keeping Jetpack until Pressfort has built up a few weeks of history.
